Rubidium was discovered in 1861 by Robert Bunsen and Gustav Kirchhoff, in Heidelberg, Germany. Rubidium compounds have various chemical and electronic applications. For example, Rubidium chloride (RbCl) is used in biochemistry to induce cells to take up DNA and as a biomarker since it is readily taken up to replace potassium, and occurs in only small quantities in living organisms.
